Claude Code
Anthropic's agentic coding tool for the terminal
Category
Coding agent
Best for
Hands-on builders who want an agent in the terminal
Pricing
Included with Claude Pro, higher limits on Max
Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent that lives in your terminal. Point it at a project folder and it reads your code, plans changes, edits files, runs commands, and explains what it did — all from a chat interface in the command line. It's the same idea as an AI editor, but for people who prefer the terminal or already work there.
It's at its best on real, existing projects: adding a feature across several files, tracking down a bug, or refactoring something tedious while you watch the diff. Because it works on your own files in your own folder, there's no lock-in — the code is yours before, during, and after.
Claude Code assumes you're comfortable looking at code and running commands. If you're brand new and just want a finished app, start with a prompt-to-app builder; come back to Claude Code when you want to understand and steer what's under the hood.
Claude Code FAQ
Is Claude Code free?
No — Claude Code requires a paid Claude plan. It's included with Claude Pro, and the higher-usage Max plans raise the limits. Check Anthropic's pricing page for current plan details.
Do I need to know how to code to use Claude Code?
Yes, some comfort helps. It works in a terminal on real project files, so you'll be reading diffs and running commands. It's a great way to learn once you have the basics, but it's not the gentlest first tool.
What is Claude Code best at?
Working inside an existing project: adding features across multiple files, hunting bugs, refactoring, and explaining unfamiliar code. It plans, edits, and runs commands, then shows you exactly what changed.
Can Claude Code build an app from scratch?
It can scaffold one, but its strength is iterating on a real codebase rather than one-shot generation. Many builders create the first version with a prompt-to-app builder, then use Claude Code for everything after.
Do I own the code Claude Code writes?
Yes — it edits files in your own project folder on your own machine. There's no platform lock-in; you can commit, host, and move the code anywhere.
Claude Code vs Cursor — which is better?
Same idea, different home: Claude Code lives in the terminal, Cursor in an editor. If you think in diffs and commands, Claude Code feels natural; if you prefer a visual editor with inline chat, Cursor does. Both assume you're comfortable reading code.
