Cursor is a fork of VS Code with an AI agent built directly into it, and its newest version leans hard into an agent-first way of working — you describe what you want changed, and it edits the actual files for you. It looks intimidating on first launch. It doesn't need to be.

Why you might use Cursor instead of a chat-based builder

Cursor is the right tool once you already have a codebase — maybe exported from another AI builder, maybe an open-source project you're customizing — and you want to make targeted changes to it. It's less "describe an app from scratch" and more "here's existing code, help me change this specific thing."

Getting oriented

1Open your project's folder in Cursor. You'll see a file list on the left — you don't need to understand every file, just know it's there.

2Find the Agent (or Composer) panel — this is the chat interface where you describe changes in plain English.

3Start small: ask it to change a headline, a color, or a piece of text you can point to. Watch it locate and edit the right file on its own.

4Review the change before accepting it. Cursor shows you a before/after diff — you don't need to read code fluently to notice "that looks like what I asked for" or "that looks wrong."

5Build up from there: layout tweaks, then new small features, then anything more structural once you're comfortable reading a diff.

The one skill worth building

Learn to read a diff at a glance — green lines added, red lines removed. You're not verifying syntax, you're verifying intent: does this change match what you asked for? That single habit will save you from accepting edits you didn't actually want.

When to reach for something else

If you're starting a brand new app from nothing, a prompt-first tool like Lovable or Bolt will get you further, faster, with less to look at. Come back to Cursor once you have real code you want to shape — that's the environment it's built for.
